Red Pepper
History:
The scientific name of red pepper is Capsicum annuum. It is also known as hot pepper, red pepper, chili pepper, or simply chili. This plant originated from the American continent. Red pepper is a climbing plant with short roots.
Red pepper is used both as a spice in cooking and as a remedy in traditional medicine. Its nature is considered hot and dry.
Composition:
Green and red hot peppers, or chili peppers, contain high amounts of fiber, copper, iron, potassium, manganese, and vitamins such as B, A, C, E, and K. The primary cause of the spicy taste of chili peppers is due to an antioxidant called capsaicin.
Health Benefits of Red Pepper:
Storage Instructions:
Red pepper powder should not be stored in very hot environments (such as storage rooms) or exposed to direct sunlight. If stored properly, it can be used for 12 to 18 months without issues.
It is best to keep spices away from moisture, as exposure to humidity can reduce their aroma and flavor. Since most spices have a soil origin and may be contaminated with soil microbes, it is recommended to use sterilized versions in hygienic packaging.
Allergies:
An allergy to red pepper occurs when the immune system mistakenly identifies the pepper as a harmful substance and labels it as a threat. Specific antibodies, known as immunoglobulins, are produced in response to the pepper. When the pepper is consumed again in the future, the immune system quickly recognizes it and releases certain chemicals to combat it, leading to allergic reaction symptoms.
Symptoms of Pepper Allergy:
Symptoms of a red pepper allergy usually appear within a few minutes to an hour after consumption. These symptoms can affect the skin, digestive system, and respiratory system. Skin reactions may include itchy rashes or hives, which can be red. Digestive symptoms may include nausea and vomiting. Respiratory symptoms may include shortness of breath, coughing, or significant changes in voice. A severe allergic reaction to red pepper, accompanied by symptoms such as shortness of breath and dizziness, is called anaphylaxis and can be life-threatening.
