Barberries

Barberries, often referred to as “red diamonds,” are small, oval-shaped, red fruits with a tangy taste. They are used both medicinally and culinarily. In addition to the fruit, the bark, roots, stems, and leaves of the barberry plant are also widely used in traditional medicine.

Barberries have a cold and dry nature, making them less suitable for individuals with a cold and dry temperament (Saudavi). However, they are beneficial for those with a warm and moist temperament (Damavi), as they help purify the blood. Barberries are not ideal for individuals with a Safravi or Balghami temperament. Saffron and nuts like almond slivers and pistachios act as corrective agents (Mosalat) for barberries. A classic example of this combination is seen in Iranian Morasa Polo, which includes barberries, saffron, and nuts.
